This exhibition is being held as part of the commemoration of Pope Francis’s visit to Korea this summer. It is focused on the origin and early history of the Catholic Church in Korea, as well as on its historical and cultural significance in Korean society. The two historic sites of the West Small Gate (Seosomun) site, which is where one of the largest anti-Catholic persecutions was staged in the 19th century, and the East Small Gate (Dongsomun) site, which is where Baekdong Benedictine Abbey once stood and played an important role in the growth of the Korean Catholic Church during the period of religious freedom, are closely related to the exhibition.
