Sungnyemun: History of Repair and Restoration
Korea's National Treasure No. 1, Sungnyemun (Gate), has been standing for more than 600 years. But its appearance has not always been the same. It evolved over time as the gate was reconstructed and repaired, and parts of it were even lost to fire and war. Thus, Sungnyemun bears the traces of multiple eras, from the 14th century, when it was first built, to the 21st century. This exhibition will provide an opportunity to look back upon the meaning and significance of Sungnyemun in Korea's tumultuous contemporary history as it underwent multiple repairs and restorations after liberation in 1945.
