A Museum Containing Your Biography - Kim Ju-ho, a Seoulite, born in 1926
This exhibition was organized to publicize Citizens' Life Museum, which will open in Nowon-gu in 2019. The private and everyday life objects of Kim Ju-ho, an ordinary Seoulite, will be on display.
The exhibits will include objects related to education, marriage and life at work in the modern times, including an identification slip for entrance examination to Gyeonggi Middle School (1939) and a certificate of graduation (1944), which show the fervor for education and educational system at the time, a certificate of appointment from Joseon Industrial Bank (1948) with the monthly salary of a bank clerk recorded (KRW 3,940) and a wedding album and a wedding invitation (1955).
In particular, the wedding album of Kim Ju-ho who had a western style wedding ceremony at Jongno Wedding Hall in 1955 contains photos of the groom dressed in a suit and the bride in a Korean style skirt and jacket carrying a bouquet as well as the scenes of reading Gocheonmun - the declaration to Heaven, throwing beans to the bride and groom as they walk down the aisle and the married couple leaving for their honeymoon to Yuseong Hot Springs. These photos are valuable in illustrating the wedding culture during the transition period from the traditional to the new western-style of wedding.
The ordinary life story of an ordinary person will help visitors to the museum remember the past of Seoul, which has been lost in time, and how we lived at the time. It will also encourage the public to develop a greater interest in the Citizens' Life Museum, which is scheduled to open next year.
